Craggy Correctional Center is operated by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction in Asheville. It is a state prison for adult male offenders, historically described by NCDAC as a medium/minimum security prison. The facility consolidated with Buncombe Correctional Center in March 2014 and has been part of the state prison system for many decades. Craggy's local history is unusually specific. Old Craggy Prison was dedicated by Buncombe County Commissioners in May 1924. NCDAC says it was one of the county prisons assumed by the state under the Conner Bill in 1931 and one of many prisons renovated or built in the late 1930s for offenders who worked building roads. NCDAC also identifies Craggy as the first state prison to install an electronic intrusion-system security fence to alert staff to attempted perimeter breaches or escapes.

Craggy Inmate Population Status

Craggy Correctional Center has a current status issue that should not be missed. On May 15, 2026, NCDAC announced the gradual closure of Craggy Correctional Center, with closure planned for late summer 2026. NCDAC said about 250 incarcerated men would transfer to other state prisons over the next few months. The same release said 77 employees would be offered jobs at other NCDAC facilities or work locations, with no layoffs expected.

NCDAC tied the closure decision to Asheville's high cost of living and difficulty recruiting and retaining correctional staff. The agency also said Craggy had already closed its minimum-security unit in 2019, converted the remaining prison from medium to minimum custody, and operated with reduced staff at less than half full offender population for two years. Because transfers are underway, a lookup result that once showed Craggy may change as NCDAC moves people to other prisons.

A local county jail phone number should not be used to confirm state-prison custody at Craggy.

Craggy Visitation Rules

Craggy visitation is a state-prison process, not a Buncombe County jail video-visit process. NCDAC facility pages link to statewide visiting information, and prison visitation normally depends on approval, scheduling, and current facility status. The county jail's Tuesday and Thursday iWebVisit schedule does not apply to Craggy. During the closure wind-down, visitation may also be affected by transfers, staffing, housing changes, or a person's new prison assignment.

Anyone planning a visit should first confirm the incarcerated person's current facility through NCDAC Offender Public Information. If the location changed after transfer, use the receiving prison's visitation rules. If the person is no longer in state prison, the locator may show release or supervision status rather than a visitable facility.
